The event, organized with Cimafunk and Cuba Educational Travel and sponsored by the Gia Maione Prima Foundation, brought together prominent musicians, industry professionals, and students from both cities.

Key highlights included:

  • A panel discussion featuring Taj Mahal, Trombone Shorty, George Clinton, and Cimafunk, moderated by singer Yola
  • Interactive performances with Cuban and American students at the Guillermo Tomas School of Music
  • An intimate performance by Cuban folk hero Carlos Varela
  • Collaborative sessions between Trombone Shorty Academy students and young Cuban musicians from Primera Linea

"Getting Funky has evolved from a cultural exchange trip to a full-fledged musical festival with significant philanthropic impact in both communities," says Collin Laverty, President of Cuba Educational Travel.

The foundation's mission extends beyond music, focusing on building cultural bridges between the two cities. As Cimafunk notes, "It's all about coming together to celebrate Africa, Funk music, and the New Orleans-Cuba friendship."

The initiative will continue at Shorty Fest in New Orleans on April 28, further strengthening the musical connection between these historically linked cities.
