The charges include abandonment of a person followed by death and narcotics-related offenses. Among those charged are:
- A hotel employee who allegedly provided cocaine to Payne twice during his stay
- A drug supplier
- An individual who accompanied Payne throughout his Buenos Aires trip
Preliminary toxicology results confirmed cocaine in Payne's system, with final results expected in the coming weeks. The autopsy revealed traumatic injuries from the three-story fall as the cause of death. Investigators discovered evidence of narcotics and alcohol in his room, including clonazepam and over-the-counter medications.
Prosecutors suggest Payne may have fallen while in a state of "semi or total unconsciousness," noting a lack of defensive injuries. The former One Direction singer had previously been open about his struggles with substance abuse and mental health, reportedly claiming sobriety just months before his death.
