Spotify Reverses Car Thing Refund Policy Following Class Action Lawsuit
Spotify has reversed its refund policy for Car Thing devices following a class action lawsuit. The streaming service will now offer refunds to users who purchased the device directly from Spotify, ahead of its December 9, 2024 shutdown date.
The Car Thing, Spotify's $90 hardware experiment, will become unusable after a firmware update on December 9, 2024. While the device was discontinued in July 2022, Spotify had initially promised continued support for existing users.

How to Get Your Car Thing Refund:
- Contact Spotify customer support
- Provide proof of purchase (email receipt from direct Spotify purchase)
- Wait 1-3 days for refund processing
Important Notes:
- Only direct Spotify purchases are eligible
- Third-party purchases (eBay, etc.) are not eligible
- Original email receipt is required
- Some users report receiving refunds in multiple installments
The policy change comes after users filed a class action lawsuit, arguing they wouldn't have purchased the device had they known it would become unusable in less than a year.
