Sony Pictures Post Production Services has expanded its audio processing capabilities by acquiring over 48 licenses of Harrison's MPC Channel Strip software for use across 14 mix stages. This continues a long-standing relationship that began in 1992 with the installation of Harrison MPC film re-recording consoles.
The MPC Channel Strip plug-in combines six essential audio processing components:
- 8-band parametric EQ with RTA
- Multi-pole filters
- Two-band de-esser
- Two-band de-noiser
- Compressor
- Routing, trim and polarity controls
A key advantage of the software is its flexible signal flow ordering, allowing engineers to customize the processing chain to their needs. This feature carries over from the original hardware consoles.
Mark Onks, Post Production Sound Engineer at Sony Pictures, explains: "We use the Harrison MPC Channel Strip plug-ins to emulate how mixers have traditionally shaped their sound sources with familiar tools. The response of the filters, equalizers and dynamics control closely matches the original hardware version."
While Sony Pictures has embraced the software solution, they maintain Harrison hardware consoles in their major stages, including the Burt Lancaster Theater, Kim Novak Theater, and William Holden Theater. The facility also utilizes Harrison's Xrange system as a powerful backbone for modern digital workflows, supporting all major formats including Atmos, Auro3D, and IMAX.
Harrison, based in Nashville since 1975, has installed over 1,500 consoles worldwide, maintaining its position as a leader in high-end audio console manufacturing.
