Meta Announces Fresh Round of Layoffs Across WhatsApp, Instagram Teams
Meta has initiated a new round of layoffs across multiple teams including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs as part of its resource reallocation strategy.

The layoffs affected employees across various departments including Facebook, recruiting, legal operations, and design. Notable among those laid off was Jane Manchun Wong, known for uncovering unreleased features in Meta's apps, who had joined the Threads team last year.
According to Meta's spokesperson, some employees were offered alternative positions or severance packages. Many chose the severance option. The company emphasized these changes are part of their long-term strategic goals and location strategy.
This latest round follows significant workforce reductions in recent years:
- 2022: 11,000 employees (13% of workforce) laid off
- 2023: 10,000 workers laid off
- 5,000 open positions eliminated
Reports from workplace app Blind and The Financial Times suggest some employees were terminated for misusing their $25 meal credits on non-food items, though this remains unconfirmed.
These layoffs continue Meta's efforts to "rightsize" the company following aggressive hiring during the pandemic period.
