Songwriter Melvin "4rest" Moore has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Chloe Bailey, Parkwood Entertainment, and Columbia Records, claiming inadequate compensation and credit for his work on multiple songs from Bailey's album "Trouble In Paradise."
The lawsuit specifically concerns three songs: "Favorite," "Might As Well," and "Same Lingerie." While Moore is credited on two of these tracks according to BMI's Songview repertory, he claims he was not properly compensated for his contributions, which were drawn from his personal experiences.
Moore attempted to resolve the issue amicably for nearly 200 days and issued a DMCA takedown notice before pursuing legal action. In a statement to Rolling Stone, he detailed his journey as a songwriter, including a two-year period of homelessness, emphasizing his continued struggle for fair compensation in the industry.
The lawsuit seeks:
- Up to $150,000 in damages per intentional violation
- Immediate cessation of commercial use of the songs
- Investigation of revenue from unauthorized use
- Proper songwriting credit
- $5 million in punitive damages per song
- Repayment of all profits from the songs' use
The case highlights ongoing issues in the music industry regarding proper attribution and compensation for songwriters' contributions to commercial releases.
