Reservoir acquires Egyptian star Omar Kamal
Omar Kamal has been instrumental in popularizing mahraganat, a fusion genre combining Egyptian rhythms, electronic music, and rap lyrics. His 2020 hit "Mahragan Bent El Geran," featuring Hassan Shakosh, garnered over 700 million YouTube views and was named one of Rolling Stone's 50 Best Arabic Pop Songs of the 21st century.
The artist's recent collaborations with Hassan Shakosh, including successful singles "Oud Al batal" and "LGHBTITA," have maintained his strong presence on YouTube. In 2021, Kamal expanded his career into acting with his debut in the television series Bayn El-Samaa Wa El-Ard.
"I'm excited to strike this deal with Reservoir and PopArabia, a company built for artists and run by artists," said Kamal. "I know this partnership will be a strong motivation for us to do great work together."
PopArabia Vice President Wissam Khodur praised Kamal's unique approach to mahraganat music, while Reservoir CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi emphasized the strategic importance of acquiring Kamal's catalog in strengthening their position in Egypt's dominant Arabic music market.
