OpenAI initially promised to launch a 'Media Manager' tool in 2024 that would allow creators and content owners to opt-out of AI training. However, as we enter 2025, the tool remains undelivered and appears to be a low priority for the company.

The tool was announced in May 2024 as a response to criticism over OpenAI's practice of using internet content for AI training. It was meant to be a groundbreaking solution allowing creators to control how their copyrighted content is used in AI development.

According to TechCrunch's investigation:

  • Former employees confirm the tool wasn't a priority
  • No one recalls active development on the project
  • Fred von Lohmann, who led the project, has left his full-time position
  • OpenAI hasn't mentioned Media Manager publicly since the initial announcement

The lack of progress on Media Manager is particularly notable as OpenAI faces multiple class action lawsuits from artists, writers, news organizations, and YouTubers over unauthorized use of their content. The company's latest AI model, Sora, continues to generate content that includes copyrighted material, highlighting the ongoing concerns about AI training data and intellectual property rights.

OpenAI previously argued that creating AI models without using copyrighted content would be nearly impossible, a stance that appears unchanged despite their earlier commitment to developing an opt-out solution.
