Iconic Austin Record Store Waterloo Records Announces New Location and Ownership After 42 Years

Austin landmark Waterloo Records is relocating to 1105 North Lamar, just five blocks from its current location, under new ownership after 42 years of operation. The move is expected to take place in Spring.

Long-time owner John Kunz is transitioning ownership to Caren Kelleher, founder of Gold Rush Vinyl, and Trey Watson, CEO of Armadillo Records. Kunz will remain involved as a minority partner.

The new location offers significant improvements:

  • 50% more space (expanding from current 6,400 sq. ft.)
  • Larger stage for in-store performances
  • Better parking facilities
  • Convenient access to downtown and music venues

"My decades-long hope has been for Waterloo Records & Video to live on forever, continuing to promote Austin's vibrant music culture and community," says Kunz. The new ownership team is committed to maintaining Waterloo's traditions while bringing fresh perspectives to the business.

The transition ensures continuity of staff employment while offering them opportunities for store ownership, preserving Waterloo Records' role as an Austin music culture cornerstone.
