Emergency services discovered the singer unresponsive after his mother alerted them. While authorities have ruled out foul play, they noted the body was found after a "significant amount of time" had passed. An autopsy has been requested to determine the official cause.
Debuting in 2002, Wheesung became a cornerstone of South Korea's R&B scene, known for emotional ballads like "With Me," "Insomnia," and "Even Thought of Marriage." He later expanded his influence through mentorship and songwriting for emerging K-pop artists. He was scheduled to perform in Daegu this weekend with ballad singer KCM.
The singer's career was marked by personal challenges, including a 2021 conviction for propofol abuse, resulting in a two-year suspended sentence. In 2020, he made headlines after being found unconscious twice, with etomidate-related materials discovered nearby.
Fellow artists have shared tributes, including longtime collaborator Yoon Min-soo, who wrote: "Wheesung, let's sing and make music freely in that place. I won't forget your pure and clear heart." Rapper Verbal Jint posted on Instagram: "Every moment we shared was an honor. You've worked so hard. Rest in peace, Wheesung."
While the investigation continues, the autopsy results are expected to provide more clarity in the coming days. The Korean music industry mourns the loss of one of its most influential R&B voices.
