Hip-hop legends De La Soul have publicly denounced an unauthorized biography titled "High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul," released by author Marcus J. Moore through Dey Street Books on November 19.

The group released a statement expressing their disapproval: "We want to make it absolutely clear: this is an unauthorized book, and we are not connected to it in any way." They emphasized their commitment to protecting their legacy and maintaining control over their story, particularly following their recent successful fight for ownership of their music catalog.

Moore, who previously authored "The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited the Soul of Black America," describes the book as a "cultural biography with critical analysis" and a personal memoir. He spent four years writing it, completing it after the passing of group member Dave and his own mother.

De La Soul announced they are "exploring all legal options" regarding the unauthorized publication. They also teased an upcoming project for Spring 2025, promising fans "authentic 'De La'" content.

While some fans defend Moore's right to pay tribute to the group, others support De La Soul's position on maintaining control of their narrative. The situation highlights the ongoing debate about unauthorized biographies and artists' rights to control their own stories.

The outcome of any potential legal action remains to be seen, as does the nature of De La Soul's promised 2025 project.
