11,500+ Artists, Including Thom Yorke and Björk, Call for Strict AI Training Regulations
More than 11,500 creative professionals, including prominent artists Thom Yorke, Björn Ulvaeus, Max Richter, and Billy Bragg, have signed a petition demanding stricter regulations for AI training practices.
The Human Artistry Campaign organized the petition in response to the UK government's proposed changes to copyright law, which would allow AI companies to train their models on copyrighted works without licensing agreements.

The petition emphasizes that unauthorized use of creative works for AI training poses a significant threat to creators' livelihoods. This comes amid several ongoing lawsuits in the United States against AI companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity.
Most recently, the owners of the Wall Street Journal and New York Post filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI, alleging unauthorized use of hundreds of thousands of articles in their retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) database. The publishers claim Perplexity ignored licensing requests and is unfairly competing by reproducing their paywalled content.
These legal challenges will test the boundaries of "fair use" in AI training, with companies like Anthropic arguing that their use of copyrighted materials falls under this protection. The outcome of these cases could set important precedents for the future of AI development and creative rights protection.
