TikTok Dominates US Social Media With 107 Daily Minutes Despite Ban Threats
Despite federal ban concerns, TikTok continues to dominate social media engagement in the United States, with users spending an average of 107 minutes daily on the app in January 2024, according to new data from Guggenheim Partners and Apptopia.

TikTok's engagement significantly outperforms other major platforms:
- TikTok: 107 minutes per day
- YouTube: 87 minutes per day
- Facebook: 63 minutes per day
47% of TikTok's daily users qualify as "superusers," spending at least 61 minutes daily on the platform. However, YouTube maintains its position as the most popular app among American teens, with 73% reporting daily use compared to TikTok's 57% and Instagram's 50%.
The platform faces regulatory challenges as President Biden signed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok's US operations by January 19, 2025, or face a ban. The concern stems from potential data security risks, as Chinese law requires ByteDance to share information with the government if requested.
Recently, President Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension on potential app store bans, allowing more time to find a US buyer. However, both ByteDance and Chinese authorities have expressed opposition to any sale.

Despite these challenges, TikTok's engagement metrics continue to grow, solidifying its position as a dominant force in social media while competing directly with YouTube for user attention.
