As Americans brace for a potential TikTok ban, Rednote, a Chinese social media platform, has experienced an unprecedented surge in downloads, reaching over 1 million US users in just one week.

The app, known as Xiaohongshu in China, saw American downloads skyrocket from 36,619 to 1,137,241 - a staggering 2,770% increase. This surge reflects growing user concerns about TikTok's future in the United States.

Global adoption of Rednote has been equally impressive, with 4.3 million total downloads worldwide. The top downloading countries include:

  • United States: 1,137,241
  • China: 869,778
  • Mexico: 185,607
  • United Kingdom: 181,644
  • Indonesia: 179,394

Notable TikTok creators making the switch to Rednote include Bella Poarch, Loren Gray, Sabrina Carpenter, and Selena Gomez.

ByteDance's other platform, Lemon8, also benefited from the situation with 2 million worldwide downloads last week, marking a 50% increase. Instagram similarly saw an 11% monthly increase, reaching 63.6 million global downloads.

Meanwhile, TikTok's revenue has taken a hit, with in-app purchases declining 17% ($31 million) globally in January 2025 compared to December 2024. This decrease extends beyond the US market, suggesting broader impacts on the platform's monetization.
