Sonos faced significant challenges in 2024, with a problematic app rollout that reportedly cost the company $100 million in revenue. This led to CEO Patrick Spence's departure and delayed several product launches, including their highly anticipated video streaming device.

The company's new video streaming device, codenamed Pinewood, is currently in development. According to reports from The Verge, it's a black square device slightly thicker than a deck of cards, with pricing expected between $200-$400. This positions it as one of the more premium offerings compared to competitors like Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Firestick.

Key features of the new Sonos streamer include:

  • Android-based operating system
  • Multiple HDMI ports with passthrough technology
  • Universal search capabilities
  • Integrated Sonos Voice control
  • Support for external devices (gaming consoles, Blu-ray players)
  • Potential surround sound configuration with existing Sonos speakers

The device aims to unify video streaming and home entertainment systems under a single interface, giving Sonos greater control over the user's entertainment setup. However, specific speaker arrangements that will be supported remain unconfirmed.

Interim CEO Tom Conrad, formerly CTO at Pandora, will address investors about the company's future direction. The company continues to work on improving its app experience, though the new version still lacks some features from its predecessor.
