Following the successful in-orbit testing of SXM-9, SiriusXM has commissioned Maxar Space Systems to build three additional satellites: SXM-10, SXM-11, and SXM-12. The SXM-10 is scheduled for launch later this year.
The SXM-9 satellite specifications:
- Height: Over 27 feet
- Length: Over 100 feet (with solar arrays deployed)
- Weight: 6,400 kg at launch
- Features: Large unfurlable S-band reflector antenna by L3Harris
- Coverage: Reaches approximately 167 million SiriusXM-equipped vehicles
Bridget Neville, SiriusXM's Senior Vice President & GM of Signal Distribution Engineering, emphasized that these launches will enhance their satellite delivery systems and ensure service continuity for decades.
The new satellite will provide continuous audio entertainment and information services to consumers across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Built on the Maxar 1300 platform, SXM-9 is the tenth high-powered, digital audio radio satellite constructed by Maxar Space Systems for SiriusXM.
Chris Johnson, CEO of Maxar Space Systems, confirmed that the Maxar 1300 platform was chosen for its mission adaptability and reliability, making it ideal for SiriusXM's current and future satellite fleet requirements.
