Shailene Woodley Will Perform Her Own Vocals as Janis Joplin in Upcoming Biopic
Shailene Woodley has confirmed she will perform her own vocals as Janis Joplin in the upcoming musical biopic, where she serves as both star and producer. The project, which received a $2.5 million tax credit from the California Film Commission, has been in development for seven years.
In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Woodley shared her initial hesitation about singing, stating, "I don't know how to sing anything." However, renowned music producer Linda Perry helped her develop her voice for the role through unconventional training methods, including impromptu performances with full bands in empty warehouses.

The biopic joins a notable lineup of musical films in production, alongside projects about Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Yacht Rock. Production is scheduled to span 30 days with approximately $10 million in qualified expenditures.
"[Joplin] is such a groovy chick, man. She really brought the light to this planet in a singular way, and it has been so much fun to dive into her story," Woodley expressed during her interview.
