The resolution, introduced by Council Member Shahana Hanif, addresses the current streaming payment model where artists receive less than a third of a penny per play. The Living Wage for Musicians Act would establish a new streaming royalty paid directly to artists, supplementing their existing royalties.

Key supporters of the resolution include Council Members De La Rosa, Ossé, Rivera, Menin, Cabán, Brannan, Louis, Brewer, Riley, Farías, and Bottcher.

Notable impacts of this legislation:

  • Creates additional revenue stream for musicians
  • Addresses compensation issues in the streaming industry
  • Supports over 14,000 NYC-based musicians
  • Aims to ensure fair compensation in the music capital of the world

"This is a huge win for NYC musicians, and musicians across the country. It proves once again that when artists stand together united, we can fight and we can win," states UMAW organizer Joey La Neve DeFrancesco.

The resolution demonstrates growing political support for fair streaming compensation, addressing a widely acknowledged problem in the music industry while supporting the sustainability of music creation in New York City and beyond.
