Netflix is exploring the addition of video podcasts to its streaming platform in a bid to compete with YouTube's dominance in this growing market. Multiple industry insiders have confirmed that the streaming giant is actively seeking content creators for this new format.

The company previously attempted to secure Alex Cooper's "Call Me Daddy" podcast, though Cooper ultimately signed with SiriusXM for over $125 million. Netflix continues to pursue other prominent podcasters for potential partnerships.

Netflix has already shown success in similar content formats, with comedian John Mulaney's six-week show 'John Mulaney: Presents Everybody's in LA' leading to an extended 12-week program, 'Everybody's Live with John Mulaney.'

Key benefits of video podcasts for Netflix include:

  • Lower production costs compared to traditional TV shows
  • Rapid content production
  • Regular release schedules (weekly or bi-weekly)
  • Higher viewer retention
  • Strong appeal to Gen Z (89% of whom watched or listened to podcasts in 2024)

Netflix is considering two potential approaches:

  1. Licensing existing podcasts without exclusivity
  2. Creating in-house content through dedicated podcast studios

For exclusive content, Netflix might secure podcasts for approximately 12 months before allowing distribution on other platforms, potentially offering ad-free listening as an added benefit to subscribers.
