The forensic medical team of the Supreme Court of Justice of Argentina reported that Payne, 31, suffered "multiple trauma and internal and external bleeding" and died on impact. The incident occurred while he was in Argentina to attend Niall Horan's concert.
Emergency services received a call at approximately 5:40 PM ET on Wednesday, October 16, reporting an "aggressive man" possibly under the influence. Upon arrival, authorities found Payne unresponsive in the hotel's courtyard with severe head injuries.
Pablo Policicchio, communications director of the Ministry of Security of Buenos Aires, stated that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room." The investigation revealed:
- No other individuals were present in the room
- Evidence of alcohol or drugs was found in the hotel room
- The victim showed no signs of defensive posturing during the fall
- He may have been in a "state of semi or total unconsciousness"
Payne had previously been open about his struggles with addiction and had celebrated six months of sobriety earlier this year.
