Randy Newman Sells Music Rights to Litmus Music in Major Deal, Including Iconic Toy Story Songs
Randy Newman has sold his music rights to Litmus Music, a Carlyle Global Credit-backed company, in their latest high-profile acquisition. The deal encompasses Newman's share of both recorded music and publishing rights.
The agreement includes Newman's extensive work on animated films, including:
- "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story and its sequels
- Music from Cars
- Soundtracks from Monsters, Inc.
- Various other animated features

The catalog also features notable hits spanning multiple decades:
- "I Love L.A." (1983)
- "Feels Like Home" (1990s)
- "Mama Told Me Not to Come" (1967)
- "It's a Jungle Out There" (Monk theme song)
Newman's portfolio includes approximately twelve solo studio albums, from his 1968 self-titled debut to 2017's "Dark Matter," along with numerous soundtrack albums. His achievements include 23 Grammy nominations and seven wins.
This acquisition joins Litmus Music's growing portfolio, which includes rights from other prominent artists such as Katy Perry, Benny Blanco, and Keith Urban. While specific financial terms weren't disclosed, the deal represents another significant move in the ongoing trend of music catalog acquisitions.
Dan McCarroll, Litmus co-founder and CCO, expressed pride in acquiring Newman's "beautiful, witty, and sharply observational songs," while CEO Hank Forsyth emphasized the timeless nature of Newman's music and its impact across generations.
