Speaking on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show, Jelly Roll revealed that his team noticed suspicious activity when competing for the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts. According to Hits Daily Double, both BBR/Republic (Jelly Roll) and Atlantic (Charli XCX) were projected to debut in the low 150,000 range.
The controversy emerged when approximately 40,000 albums suddenly appeared from a third-party aggregator just before the final count. Luminate, the official chart tracking company, ultimately rejected these suspicious sales.
Key points from Jelly Roll's revelation:
- The rejected sales affected the final chart positions
- Rod Wave actually achieved the highest streaming numbers
- Traditional album sales at retailers like Walmart and Target influenced the final rankings
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about transparency and fairness in music industry chart calculations, particularly regarding sudden large-volume sales from third-party sources.
