Hong Kong Protest Song Returns to Streaming Platforms Despite Ban
The protest anthem "Glory to Hong Kong" has resurfaced on Spotify and Apple Music, shortly after its removal following a Hong Kong court injunction. DGX Music has re-uploaded the song despite the court ruling that deemed it a potential catalyst for civil unrest.
The song now appears in multiple versions on streaming platforms, including:
- An acapella single version
- A Permanent Edition EP featuring orchestral arrangements
- Instrumental versions
- A music box version
- English language version
DGX Music released a statement in Chinese saying, "Unjustified repression will not silence the people, and even if we lose our instruments and our accompaniment, even if we lose a publisher, our pursuit of freedom and democracy will never end."
Originally released in August 2019 during pro-democracy protests, the song includes the phrase "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times." This phrase was later classified as pro-independence speech, which became illegal under Hong Kong's 2020 national security law.
While the original distributor EmuBands removed the song to comply with the court order, the new uploads are attributed to 7196175 Records DK on streaming platforms, with Distrokid handling YouTube distribution.
