The Recording Academy has withdrawn J-Kwon's Grammy eligibility as a songwriter for Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," which is nominated for 2025 Song of the Year. While J-Kwon's 2004 hit "Tipsy" is interpolated in the song, he will not receive songwriting credit.

Original writers Joe Kent, Mark Williams, and J-Kwon (Jerrell C. Jones) will instead be eligible for a certificate if the song wins, following Academy rules for sampled material.

"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" dominated charts for over four months, matching Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" record of 19 weeks at #1. The success earned Shaboozey five Grammy nominations, including Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, and Song of the Year.

The Virginia native's fusion of country and rap gained further recognition through his collaboration with Beyoncé on "Cowboy Carter," with their track "Spaghetti" nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

Other 2025 Song of the Year nominees include:

  • Billie Eilish - "Birds of a Feather"
  • Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars - "Die With A Smile"
  • Taylor Swift and Post Malone - "Fortnight"
  • Chappell Roan - "Good Luck, Babe!"
  • Kendrick Lamar - "Not Like Us"
  • Sabrina Carpenter - "Please Please Please"
  • Beyoncé - "Texas Hold 'Em"
