The Recording Academy (NARAS) sued their Grammy Awards program printer FX Group, LLC for an unpaid $86,000 bill, but the case was quickly dismissed by a federal judge.

The lawsuit stemmed from a broken printing agreement between NARAS and FX Group. After terminating their relationship with the longtime printer, NARAS filed the complaint seeking damages.

A U.S. District Court judge for the Central District of California dismissed the case within just four days, citing lack of subject matter jurisdiction. The judge noted that while the complaint inadequately alleged jurisdiction, NARAS could potentially amend and refile.

The quick dismissal raises questions about the cost-effectiveness of pursuing the $86,000 claim, as legal fees from NARAS's attorneys at Proskauer Rose LLP likely exceeded the disputed amount. Additionally, the public filing may have caused reputational damage to FX Group, potentially setting the stage for a countersuit or defense that could further increase costs for both parties.

The case highlights how legal disputes can often end up costing significantly more than the original amount in question, with both sides potentially facing mounting expenses regardless of the outcome.
