2025 Academy Awards Drops Live Song Performances, Shifts Focus to Songwriters
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a significant change for the 2025 Oscars ceremony: nominated songs will not be performed live during the event.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Young revealed this decision in an email to Academy members on January 22, one day before the nominations announcement. Instead of live performances, the Best Original Song category will focus on celebrating the songwriters through personal reflections from the creative teams.
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O'Brien, will emphasize the collaborative nature of filmmaking. The ceremony will feature the return of "Fab 5" moments, where individual film artists recognize nominees, and will include musical moments connecting film's history to its future.
This change comes amid wider industry developments, including a recent boycott of Spotify's Grammy celebration event by prominent songwriters due to royalty payment concerns. The ceremony will also acknowledge those affected by the recent Los Angeles-area wildfires.
The 2025 Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, March 2, maintaining its commitment to celebrating the global film community while adapting to current circumstances.
