Key findings from the report:
- Over 90% of all Content ID claims were monetized by rightsholders in 2024
- More than 99% of claims were made through automated detection
- The platform has over 7,700 Content ID partners
- Manual claims represented less than 0.5% of total claims
In the three years leading up to January 2024, YouTube paid more than $70 billion to creators, artists, and media companies combined. This includes revenue from both advertisements and YouTube Music and Premium subscriptions, which recently surpassed 125 million subscribers.
YouTube's advertising revenue continues to show strong growth, reaching $8.9 billion in Q1 2025, a 10.3% increase year over year. This outpaces Spotify's ad revenue growth of 8% ($475.3 million) during the same period.
While smaller independent creators may not directly qualify for Content ID, YouTube notes they can access these features through service providers. This addresses previous concerns about Content ID accessibility, which has been a subject of litigation from musicians.
The substantial payouts demonstrate YouTube's significant role in music monetization, particularly in today's video-focused entertainment landscape, positioning it as a major player alongside traditional music streaming platforms.
