Warner Music Group (WMG) has acquired the extensive catalogs of DWA Records and its publishing business, Extravaganza, marking a significant expansion in the Italo Disco genre.

DWA Records, founded in 1989 by Roberto Zanetti and Francesco Bontempi, has built a catalog of over 250 master recordings, including iconic tracks like Corona's "The Rhythm of the Night," Alexia's "Happy" and "Uh La La," and Zucchero's "Baila."

The acquisition significantly strengthens WMG's position in the Italo Disco genre, which emerged in Italy during the late 1970s and gained massive popularity in the 1980s. The genre is characterized by electronic drums, synthesizers, and English lyrics, influencing modern Eurobeat, Italo dance, and Italo house music.

Key figures behind the catalog:

  • Roberto Zanetti (aka Savage/Robyx): Started in the '70s with groups like Santarosa and Taxi, later producing for artists including Alexia, Corona, and Ice MC
  • Francesco Bontempi (aka Lee Marrow): Began as a drummer in the '70s, became a club DJ, and achieved success with hits like "Do You Want Me" and "Shanghai"

WMG plans to promote this repertoire globally through innovative strategies, ensuring these classic tracks reach new audiences while preserving their cultural significance. The deal represents WMG's commitment to expanding its catalog through strategic acquisitions beyond Anglo markets.

The acquisition was facilitated by Warner Music Italy and Warner Chappell Music Italy, with support from their respective executives, demonstrating WMG's dedication to preserving and promoting influential music catalogs worldwide.
