The British government has abandoned plans to ban smoking outside pubs, clubs, and cafes following strong opposition from the hospitality industry. While the new Tobacco and Vapes Bill includes strict anti-smoking measures around schools, hospitals, and playgrounds, venues in the nightlife sector will be exempt.

The decision comes after the British Beer and Pub Association warned that an outdoor smoking ban would have a "devastating impact" on venues already struggling with rising costs. Health Minister Wes Streeting emphasized that the legislation aims to reduce pressure on the NHS and save thousands of lives, while still maintaining balance with business interests.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, welcomed the government's revised approach, stating it "recognizes the important role our venues play as controlled, socially responsible spaces within communities." The decision allows pubs, bars, and clubs to continue operating while respecting patron choices and community wellbeing.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, introduced to parliament today, remains one of the world's strictest anti-smoking regulations, focusing on preventing young people from smoking while protecting the interests of the hospitality sector.
