A tourist submarine sank off Egypt's Hurghada coast on Thursday morning, resulting in six fatalities and prompting a major rescue operation. The vessel, operated by Sindbad Submarines, was carrying nearly 40 passengers, predominantly Russian nationals, when it encountered difficulties approximately one kilometer offshore during a coral reef tour.

Of the 39 passengers aboard, 33 were rescued, with 21 requiring hospitalization, including seven children aged 2 to 15. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the submarine suddenly tilt before sinking.

Sindbad Submarines, which advertises safe underwater tourism experiences with Finnish engineering and modern safety features, is now under investigation. The vessel was supposedly equipped with emergency systems including oxygen masks and life vests, and capable of reaching depths of 25 meters.

This incident occurs in Hurghada, a crucial Red Sea resort hub contributing to Egypt's tourism sector, which represents 12% of the national GDP. The region has experienced previous maritime incidents, including a yacht sinking in November.

Egyptian maritime officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the sinking. The submarine had reportedly passed all regular inspections, according to company representatives. Both Russian and Egyptian officials are coordinating response efforts as rescue teams continue to search the area.

The tragedy has raised concerns about safety standards in recreational marine vessels, particularly given recent reports of aging vessels and regulatory oversight issues in the region. Egyptian tourism authorities are expected to review safety protocols in response to this incident.

Autopsies and technical investigations are ongoing, with more updates expected in the coming days.
