SXSW is making significant changes for its 2026 edition due to a major renovation of the Austin Convention Center. While the festival will be shorter overall, the music programming will actually expand.

The $1.6 billion renovation of the Austin Convention Center, starting April 1, 2025, has prompted organizers to reimagine the festival's structure through 2029. The key change involves combining interactive, film & TV, and music programs to run concurrently rather than across separate weekends.

A SXSW spokesperson explained that the new seven-day format will allow attendees to experience the entire festival, with music fans getting seven nights of showcases instead of the traditional six. The music programming will maintain its focus on discovery while offering a more curated experience with better-distributed shows throughout the event.

This restructuring raises questions about potential competition for attention between music performances and other categories, particularly as the Film & TV section has grown increasingly prominent in recent years. However, organizers maintain that the new format will enhance rather than diminish the music festival experience.

The Austin Convention Center will reopen in time for SXSW 2029, though these programming changes could potentially influence the festival's long-term structure.
