Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Sting firmly stated that Diddy's current legal situation doesn't affect the song's legacy: "It doesn't taint the song at all for me. It's still my song."
The 1997 hit "I'll Be Missing You," featuring Faith Evans and 112, was created as a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. The collaboration led to a memorable Grammy performance in 1998, where Sting joined Diddy on stage.
The financial arrangement between the artists has been notable, with Sting receiving approximately $5,000 daily for the sample usage, which was initially unauthorized. Despite this, Sting has described Diddy as "a very good friend" and praised his interpretation of the original work.
Diddy currently faces federal charges including sex trafficking and racketeering, with his trial scheduled for May 2025. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.
