Stephen King Calls for Oscars Cancellation Due to Los Angeles Wildfires, Won't Vote This Year
Stephen King has joined other celebrities in calling for the cancellation of this year's Academy Awards due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The acclaimed author shared his stance on Bluesky social media platform, stating "Not voting for the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire."
This follows similar sentiments from "Hacks" star Jean Smart, who suggested the Academy should redirect award show revenue to wildfire relief efforts.
However, The Hollywood Reporter confirms the 96th Academy Awards will proceed as scheduled on March 2, 2025. The Academy's leadership believes the show should continue while incorporating fundraising efforts for fire relief and recovery.
The suggestion to cancel has faced criticism from industry professionals and observers, who argue that:
- The entertainment industry needs support after COVID-19 and union strikes
- Awards show workers depend on the event for income
- The ceremony could serve as a platform for raising wildfire relief funds
- The show provides needed distraction during difficult times
In response to the wildfires, the Academy has already made some adjustments:
- Extended Oscar nomination voting window through Tuesday, January 14 (5 PM PT)
- Postponed nomination announcements from January 17 to January 19
