Spotify is testing new video features for audiobooks, expanding beyond its recent push into video podcasts. The streaming giant is introducing several enhancements for premium users that combine visual elements with traditional audiobook listening.

The new features include:

  • 30-second video clips from authors or publishers
  • Behind-the-scenes footage and author interviews
  • "Follow Along" feature showing illustrations and photos while listening
  • Dedicated author pages showcasing backgrounds and complete catalogs
  • Built-in Sleep Timer functionality

These features are currently available to premium subscribers in supported markets, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The rollout is limited to select authors and publishers and is currently mobile-only.

The move aligns with CEO Daniel Ek's vision for expanded video offerings, as Spotify aims to capture more market share from YouTube in the video content space. The platform has seen increased video consumption since introducing music videos and video podcasts.

The Sleep Timer addition is particularly valuable for users purchasing audiobooks by listening hour, as it prevents unwanted playback and helps manage listening time efficiently.

The visual enhancements are designed to create a more immersive experience, allowing users to feel more connected to the content while maintaining the convenience of audio consumption. All visual elements can be accessed through the "extras" section, with timestamps for easy navigation between chapters.
