The original creative team returns with Rob Reiner directing and the main trio reprising their roles: Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins), Christopher Guest (Nigel Tunfel), and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls). The sequel features an impressive lineup of celebrity cameos, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood, alongside Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, and several other notable performers.

To introduce new audiences to the franchise, a newly restored print of the original film will return to theaters this summer before becoming available on streaming platforms.

The release comes after the creators' $400 million lawsuit against UMG's then-parent Vivendi was settled in 2019. The lawsuit, filed in 2016, addressed soundtrack royalties, with the creators claiming they received only $98 in royalties between 1989 and 2006. Under the settlement terms, UMG will continue distributing recordings from the original film until rights revert to the creators.

Rob Reiner, who plays Marty DiBergi in both films, expressed enthusiasm about working with Bleecker Street to preserve Tap's legacy while creating fresh content for both new and existing fans. Bleecker Street emphasized the original film's cultural significance as a pioneer of the mockumentary genre and its lasting impact on film and music.
