Sony Music has taken down over 75,000 AI-generated deepfake tracks, according to their recent submission to the UK's AI copyright regulations consultation. This revelation comes as the company strongly opposes proposed AI legislation that would allow AI companies to train models on copyrighted materials without prior authorization.

Key points about Sony Music's AI concerns:

  • The takedown count increased dramatically from 10,000 in November 2023 to 75,000 currently
  • This represents approximately 144 flagged works per day
  • The company warns that the proposed "opt-out" system would:
    • Harm artists
    • Disrupt existing licensing negotiations
    • Negatively impact intellectual property rights
    • Cause economic damage

The UK government's proposed AI regulations aim to "turbocharge AI" while promoting economic growth. However, major music industry players, including the major labels, Merlin, and AIM, have expressed serious concerns about the approach.

The government is currently reviewing feedback from the 10-week consultation period, which ended on February 25th. Reports indicate that the publication of the comprehensive AI Bill has been delayed until at least summer, suggesting ongoing discussions about these crucial copyright issues.

While Sony Music's robust flagging procedures have helped identify unauthorized AI-generated content, there are concerns that some deepfakes may still slip through the cracks, and the problem could worsen in the coming years as AI technology advances.
