The cancelled Edelman documentary, which took five years to create, was planned as a six-part, nine-hour series with exclusive access to Prince's archives. The estate cited "dramatic factual inaccuracies" and "sensationalized" content as reasons for termination, particularly regarding controversial accounts from former girlfriends including allegations of abuse.
L. Londell McMillan, co-manager of Prince Legacy LLC, confirmed that a new agreement has been reached with Netflix. The estate's documentary will focus on exploring "the complexities of the brilliant musical genius" with exclusive content from Prince's archive.
Key points about the new documentary:
- Will be produced by Prince's estate
- Features exclusive archive content
- Maintains Netflix partnership
- Release date pending announcement
The estate's decision ensures they maintain control over Prince's legacy while still delivering the anticipated documentary to fans through the Netflix platform.
