Primary Wave has acquired a 50% stake in the Notorious B.I.G.'s catalog, valuing the late rapper's life work at over $200 million. The deal encompasses recordings, publishing rights, and name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights.

The agreement, which was approved by Biggie's mother shortly before her passing at age 78, opens new opportunities for the rapper's legacy. Primary Wave plans to pursue "less but larger" projects, including:

  • A potential Broadway production
  • Immersive music experiences
  • Digital avatar licensing opportunities

While the $200 million valuation falls below initial estimates of $300 million, the deal represents a significant investment in hip-hop's cultural legacy. Primary Wave's extensive experience in managing musical estates suggests more strategic use of Biggie's intellectual property compared to previous efforts.

However, the deal has sparked some controversy, with concerns raised about the estate's handling of the transaction. Biggie's daughter, T'yanna Wallace, who currently operates Notoriouss Clothing and Brooklyn's Biggie Experience museum, may be affected by this development.

Such IP disputes aren't uncommon in the music industry, as evidenced by similar situations with James Brown's catalog and Michael Jackson's family's opposition to catalog sales. The full impact of this transaction on the Notorious B.I.G.'s legacy and family relationships remains to be seen.
