Madlib, the renowned producer and DJ, has filed a lawsuit against his longtime manager Eothen Alapatt (known professionally as Egon) for alleged mismanagement and self-dealing. The lawsuit comes after 14 years of business relationship following Madlib's departure from Stones Throw Records.
Key allegations in the lawsuit include:
- Egon's unilateral control over Madicine Show and Rapp Cats, two companies established to manage Madlib's career and merchandise
- Improper insertion of Now-Again Records as a middleman with distributor Ingrooves
- Unauthorized fee collection from Madlib's project revenues
- Accounting irregularities involving hundreds of thousands in consulting and reimbursement payments
- Lack of documentation for millions in bank deposits
- Failure to provide complete business records and grant access to social media accounts
- Unauthorized representation by shared legal and accounting professionals
The lawsuit seeks:
- Dissolution of both Madicine Show and Rapp Cats
- Claims breach of fiduciary duty against Egon and Now-Again
- Termination of rights granted to both companies regarding recorded music and trademarks
A forensic accounting investigation covering 2018-2022 revealed these issues, leading to Madlib's legal action to regain control of his music rights and business affairs.
