Macy's to Close 66 Stores in 2025 with Massive Clearance Sales up to 90% Off
Macy's is closing 66 stores across the United States by 2025, part of a larger plan to shutter 150 locations by 2026. These closures will feature clearance sales offering up to 90% off merchandise.
The first major closure will be the Sunrise Mall location in Massapequa, New York, closing April 11, 2025, after 50 years of operation. This closure alone will impact 77 employees.
CEO Tony Spring stated these closures target underperforming stores to focus resources on more profitable locations. While downsizing traditional stores, Macy's plans to expand its Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury brands, adding 15 and 30 new locations respectively.
After all planned closures, Macy's will operate 350 stores, down from 1,100 in 2008. The 50 stores already remodeled under the new strategy have shown improved sales performance.
