Rodney O claims he wasn't properly compensated for the use of his 1988 song "Everlasting Bass," which was sampled in "Like That." The lawsuit targets not only the artists but also Epic Records and Barry White's estate.
Key points of the lawsuit:
- Rodney O says he was only shown a version featuring Future's work one week before release
- He wasn't aware of Kendrick Lamar's involvement until the day before release
- The original version shown was two minutes long and didn't include Kendrick's contribution
- He wasn't given the opportunity to approve or deny the use of his sample in a Drake diss track
- Rodney O was excluded from Grammy nominations for the song
Additionally, Rodney O is countersuing Barry White's estate, which filed a copyright infringement claim against him. He argues that there were no issues with his 1988 song for 35 years until "Like That" brought renewed attention to it.
Rodney O maintains that the only unauthorized Barry White sample appears in Kanye West's unofficial remix of "Like That," not in his original work.
