
Harry Fox Agency Contests Claims in Eminem's Spotify Copyright Lawsuit
The Harry Fox Agency (HFA) has filed a strong rebuttal against allegations in the ongoing Eminem vs. Spotify lawsuit regarding unpaid royalties. The case centers around claims of copyright infringement involving 243 of Eminem's tracks.

Eight Mile Style, Eminem's publisher, initially sued Spotify in August 2019, seeking $36.45 million in damages ($150,000 per track) plus a share of streaming revenues. Spotify denied these claims, stating Eight Mile Style had received "substantial royalty payments" for nearly a decade.
The case expanded when Spotify filed a third-party complaint against Kobalt Music Publishing, arguing they were properly licensed through Kobalt to distribute Eminem's music. Eight Mile Style then added HFA as a defendant, accusing both companies of orchestrating a "fraudulent scheme" to hide Spotify's alleged failure to obtain proper mechanical licenses.
HFA has now requested an oral argument in Nashville federal court regarding their motion to dismiss, citing the case's complex legal and factual issues. The agency believes verbal proceedings would benefit the court's understanding and serve judicial efficiency.
Meanwhile, Spotify continues to innovate, having recently patented "spoken words analyzer" technology for AI-based song classification, and is preparing to launch its service in South Korea in early 2021.
