Drake has denied sending an alleged Instagram DM to celebrity stylist Chris Blake Griffith regarding his ongoing legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG).

The purported message, which Griffith shared on Tuesday, contained detailed explanations about Drake's legal actions against UMG, comparing his situation to "Nike funding a campaign about LeBron cheating on his wife." The message also discussed making the music industry "a safer place for every artist moving forward."

DJ Akademiks, a close associate of Drake, quickly responded on social media stating, "This is a fake DM. Drake called buddy a rat... he got mad and made up some fake DM to try to make the blogs and go viral."

The controversy comes amid Drake's ongoing legal battle with UMG, which includes two pre-action petitions filed in November. These petitions allege that UMG:

  • Used bots and payola schemes to artificially boost Kendrick Lamar's diss track "Not Like Us"
  • Engaged in defamation by allowing the release of content with serious allegations against Drake

Two court hearings are scheduled:

  • January 13: Regarding Drake's request to depose UMG and iHeartMedia employees
  • January 16: Concerning Drake's separate filing against UMG and Spotify

The case highlights growing tensions between artists and major labels in the digital streaming era, with implications for artist rights and label relationships.
