Musicians Club CEO Baldvin Oddsson abruptly terminated 90% of his staff—99 out of 110 employees—following a poorly communicated morning meeting on November 15. The dismissal was delivered via Slack message, primarily affecting freelancers and unpaid interns.

According to Oddsson's Slack message, only 11 people attended the mandatory meeting, prompting him to terminate the remaining 99 employees for failing to meet their contractual obligations. "Those 11 get to stay. The rest of you are terminated," the CEO stated bluntly.

However, terminated employees have shared contradicting accounts on Reddit, citing:

  • No prior notification about the meeting
  • Lack of access to relevant Slack channels
  • Different time zones and scheduling conflicts
  • Some were new hires who joined the same morning
  • Even long-term workers received no warning

The Musicians Club primarily employed unpaid interns and remote workers, targeting classical music students seeking experience. A recent job listing for an unpaid operations manager position attracted 51 applicants, promising potential paid conversion in 2025 and "practical experience in managing and optimizing online sales platforms."

Critics are now challenging Oddsson's business model, which relied heavily on unpaid remote interns. While former employees express their frustration on social media, Oddsson defended his decision on LinkedIn, maintaining it was the right choice for his business despite being labeled "heartless" by critics.
