Following a hiatus in 2023, the AMAs celebrated their legacy with a 50th anniversary special in October, which proved highly successful with 6 million viewers - a 54% increase from the 2022 show. The special also achieved record-breaking streaming numbers, generating 65 million social media views in its first week.
The 2024 show promises special tributes to veterans through performances and memorable moments. CBS has already teased appearances from major artists including Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Megan Thee Stallion, Shakira, Rihanna, The Weeknd, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The American Music Awards, created by Dick Clark in 1974, originally emerged when ABC lost Grammy Awards broadcasting rights to CBS. The show remained on ABC until 2022, when the network opted not to renew its contract. The last regular ceremony in 2022 saw Taylor Swift extend her record as the most-awarded artist in AMAs history with six additional wins.
While specific details about the Las Vegas venue and host remain unannounced, this revival comes at a crucial time when major awards shows have been experiencing declining viewership over the past decade. The move to CBS and Las Vegas represents a significant shift in the show's 50-year history and an opportunity for reinvention.
