Bob Dylan Biopic 'A Complete Unknown' Hits $23M Box Office Success Before IMAX Debut
Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" has generated $23.17 million in domestic box office sales since its Christmas Day release, including $11.6 million over the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The 141-minute film is scheduled for IMAX release on January 3rd.

The film's solid performance amid ongoing box-office recovery could drive additional revenue through streaming and physical sales. In September, Dylan released a comprehensive 27-CD set featuring over 400 tracks, targeting dedicated fans.
The movie, starring Timothée Chalamet (29) and Elle Fanning (26), may help introduce Dylan's music to younger audiences - a phenomenon that has previously benefited artists like Fleetwood Mac. Dylan sold his recordings to Sony Music in early 2022, following the sale of his compositional rights to Universal Music Publishing Group in late 2020.
The biopic has also boosted sales of its source material, Elijah Wald's "Dylan Goes Electric!" which currently tops Amazon's Rock Music and Folk & Traditional Music categories.
The success of "A Complete Unknown" may encourage more musical biopics, though documentaries remain popular in the genre. Recent examples include Disney+'s "The Beach Boys" (May 2023) and "Beatles '64," with an authorized Led Zeppelin documentary scheduled for February release.
